One Million Trees Project

1 Million Trees: The Tłı̨chǫ Government Launches the Largest Tree Planting Project in NWT History

The Tłı̨chǫ Government is taking action to restore the land that has supported us for generations.

Starting July 10, we will launch the largest tree planting project ever done in the Northwest Territories. In just three weeks, we will plant 1 million trees. This is a major step in helping our forests recover and protecting our communities from future wildfires.

To make this happen, we are working with partners who have experience running large planting projects. In early July, we will set up a camp near Russell Lake to house 80 tree planters from across Canada. They will be helping us plant trees and teach us how to manage a big project like this.

This first year is focused on learning. As we gain experience, the Tłı̨chǫ Government and local workers will take on more responsibilities each year.

Where we will plant:

  • Along the road into Behchokǫ̀
  • Along the road to Russell Lake
  • Across James Lake in the northwest corner of Marion Lake

This project will bring many benefits:

  • Create jobs for Tłı̨chǫ Citizens
  • Help the forest grow back faster
  • Protect our land and communities from future wildfires

What to expect in Behchokǫ̀ this summer:
You may notice more people in the community this July. Tree planters will work alongside local crews for 3 days at a time, with 1 day off. They will stay near Russell Lake but will come into town for supplies and to explore the area.

We will be hiring community members to lead cultural workshops for the planters on their days off. This will create local jobs and allow us to share Tłı̨chǫ knowledge and culture with the people helping us.

You may also see helicopters flying over Behchokǫ̀ for a few days in July. These will be used to support planting operations and will avoid flying over town as much as possible.

This is a long-term project. Over the next 6 years, trees will be planted in all four Tłı̨chǫ communities. We are proud to be restoring our land, creating opportunities for our people, and sharing our culture.
