The Tłı̨chǫ Government's Justice and Victims Services Division provides a number of programs and services aimed at reducing crime as well as providing support and rehabilitation to those who have been victims of crime. The division hosts educational and preventative programs for the community regularly to raise awareness on high-risk issues, as well as support school programs.
Justice and Victims Coordinators are available in all four Tlicho communities of Behchokǫ̀, Whatı̀, Gamètı̀ and Wekweètì to provide these judicial and support services to victims and those accused or convicted. The RCMP may refer a victim to the Tłı̨chǫ Government Justice Department or a person can contact us directly if they have been a victim of a crime and need our help.
How does a Justice and Victims Coordinator provide support?
Each Justice and Victims Coordinator will only work on one side of a case. So, if a Justice and Victims Coordinator is helping the victim of a crime, the coordinator will not work with the person accused of committing that crime. Another staff person will work with the person accused.
The effects of a crime can last a long time. A Justice and Victims Coordinator can support a victim until the victim decides that they no longer need our services. We do not just close cases when the court case is done, we wait for victims to be ready to close the file.
