Under the direction of the Manager of Community Care, the Community Youth and Elder Support Workers play important roles; bridging gaps with services, addressing unique challenges, promoting the well-being and cultural preservation of Tłı̨chǫ citizens with a particular focus on needs of youth and elders; serves as first point of contact, act as a liaison and provides holistic support and assistance with cultural sensitivity and a commitment to empowering and advocating for their needs and concerns and enhancing quality of life for our residents and citizens within the Tłı̨chǫ communities and Yellowknife, and must follow applicable Tłı̨chǫ Government Administrative Policies and Procedures.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • College diploma/university degree in a health or social services related programs
  • Minimum 3 years of work experiences in a related field
  • Familiarity with the Tłı̨chǫ language, culture and way of life
  • Demonstrated ability in written, oral and interpersonal communication skills in English
  • Basic computer skills
  • Satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector check
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certificate
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to use/speak the English and Tłı̨chǫ languages is an asset

OUTLINE OF POSITION:

Under direction of the Manager of the Clinical Care and Case Management, the Tłı̨chǫ Outreach Worker is accountable for providing services to Tłı̨chǫ citizens who are experiencing homelessness in the four Tłı̨chǫ communities and Yellowknife by: conducting client assessment and completing client intake, providing support and assistance to clients, referring clients to counseling, supervision and other supports, providing clients with program referrals, and providing community coordination and mobilization of volunteers. The Outreach Worker assists with resource acquisition, empowers clients to move beyond systemic barriers, assists with capacity building and must comply with relevant legislation, Tłı̨chǫ Government policies and procedures and funding program criteria and regulations.

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Education in social services, mental health, or trauma counselling and/or extensive experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty on account of physical, mental, or psychological disability, and or, substance use challenges
  • Knowledge of causal factors of homelessness, mental illness and or addiction and an ability to empathize when engaging with individuals experiencing life difficulties
  • Ability to quickly develop and foster a trusted relationship with people facing homelessness and multiple barriers
  • Understands the importance of cultural and community connections in supporting individuals as they improve personal well-being, exit homelessness and become self-sufficient
  • Strong skills in conflict de-escalation and negotiation for the resolution of evolving situations
  • Good Understanding of traditional, cultural and/or holistic wellness and healing initiatives
  • Good verbal and written communications skills and able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Proficient in computer applications and software including MS Office tools
  • Demonstrated ability to partner and engage with community partners, including advocates, volunteers, local business owners, neighbours, and community members
  • Ability to learn government policy and community housing mandates, programs and services
  • Strong organizational, planning, decision-making, and time management skills
  • Knowledge of the Tłı̨chǫ political environment, and familiarity with the Tłı̨chǫ language, culture, and way of life preferred
  • Criminal record check required
