October 24, 2024, Behchokǫ̀ - Chiefs Executive Council (CEC) is pleased to announce that the Tłı̨chǫ Government (TG) is launching a private home renovation and replacement project as part of its Action Plan to address critical housing needs across the four Tłı̨chǫ communities of Behchokǫ̀, Whatì, Gamètì, and Wekweètì. This project is vital in improving living conditions for Tłı̨chǫ citizens, especially those in homes requiring urgent repairs.
In 2023, a comprehensive technical assessment was conducted on all private houses in the Tłı̨chǫ communities. Based on the condition of the housing CEC identified the following categories for renovation and replacement.
- Structural
- Roofing
- Mechanical and Electrical
- Sewer and water; and
- Bathroom Repairs
Tłı̨chǫ Citizen’s private homes with these issues will be addressed urgently due to their immediate needs.
The renovations will focus on:
- Demolishing houses that are beyond repair.
- Building new homes to replace demolished ones.
- Conducting essential repairs such as re-levelling, roofing, upgrading electrical systems, replacing fuel tanks, mould remediation, and addressing plumbing and freeze-up issues in homes that do not require demolition.
CEC has made this project a priority for the Department of Infrastructure, and renovation and construction activities are expected to begin at the end of 2024. CEC encourages all citizens to carry out regular preventative maintenance on their homes to reduce damage from our harsh weather conditions.
