The Kole Crook Fiddle Association has been able to teach fiddling and fiddle dancing to many Behchoko students this past school year. The students have demonstrated a remarkable improvement in their ability to play. Here is an outline of the fiddling activities since September 2015.
1. SEPTEMBER 25-26 - AURORA WORKSHOP, Yellowknife
Fourteen Behchoko students traveled to Yellowknife for a weekend of fiddle lessons.
2. OCTOBER 9 - 11 - HAY RIVER WORKSHOP
Thirteen students plus four chaperones traveled by bus to Hay River for theThanksgiving weekend workshop at the Chief Sunrise School.
3. FORT SIMPSON ANNUAL JANUARY JAMBOREE 2016
In January, 19 Behchoko students traveled by bus to join students from 9 other communities for a weekend of fiddle lessons, orchestra classes, fiddle dancing and fun at the EMES in Fort Simpson.
4. AURORA FIDDLE WORKSHOP JANUARY 23-24, 2016
Twelve students traveled to Yellowknife the weekend after the Fort Simpson trip to again partake in fiddle lessons.
5. BEHCHOKO FIDDLE WORKSHOP, FEB. 26-28, EMES
Thirty students came for a weekend of fiddle lessons, fiddle dancing, and performing. It was an awesome weekend.
6. AURORA WORKSHOP, MARCH 26-27, 2016
Eleven students participated in this workshop.
7. BEHCHOKO WORKSHOP MAY 21-22, EMES
This was our final workshop for this year. The students have grown in so many ways. They are attentive listeners, listening to their instructors as well as their fellow students playing, developing a sound expertise in fiddle playing. The students also love to dance and to perform! Thank you to Community of Behchoko and Tlicho Government for ther support.
