Winter Road Update - Jan. 25, 2025

NS Winter Road Update:

The Dettah ice road opened to public light traffic on Dec. 21, 2024. This is only the third time since 2014/15 that the ice crossing has been able to open prior to Christmas.

Equipment mobilization to the Tłįchǫ Winter Road entrance area the commenced the second week of December. Shortly thereafter construction activities started and continued through until to December 23rd, 2024. Construction activities resumed again January 6th, 2025.

Dettah Ice Road: Km 0 to Km 6.4 Open to Light Traffic 20,000 kg GVW 
Weight limits for light vehicle traffic are currently at a max GVW of 20,000 kg. Speed limits are 40 km/h. Drive with caution and watch for rough sections along the alignment. Watch for slow moving or parked vehicles and pedestrian traffic. Please do not litter.

Gamètì Winter Road: Km 0 to Km 151 Closed - Currently Under Construction 
Hwy-9 to the Wekweètì Jct: P8 to P13 This section of winter road alignment is completed to full width. (km 0 – 24.5)

Wekweètì Jct to Squirrell Lake North: Gamètì P13 north to P28 (Km 24.5 – 78.4)
The Gamètì south crew is approximately 80% complete on the portages through to P23 (64 Km). 
Clearing, dragging, watering, and grooming overland areas from P24 to P26 is underway. Water bodies in this section have been cleared to width through to Squirrell Lake where snow clearing is currently underway.

Gamètì to Mazenod Bay South: Gamètì south to P30 (Km 151 – 82.5)
The Gamètì north crew has mostly completed land portions south to P33 and water bodies through to P30 (68.5 km). Dragging, watering, and grooming P33 to P31 is underway. Constructing centerline on overland sections and clearing waterbodies full width to Mazenod Bay will continue through the weekend.

Wekweètì Winter Road: Closed - Currently Under Construction
Km 0 to Km 243 Gamètì /Wekweètì Jct to Snare Hydro Jct: P196 north to P208 (Km 0 – 32.4) 
Water bodies between P196 – P205 (16 km) are cleared to width. Watering, dragging, and grooming of overland portions within this section are ongoing. A functional centerline path is anticipated to be pushed through to P208 in the next few days.

Wekweètì to Portage 264 P271 to P264 (km 243 - 224)
The north crew mobilized late last week; with safety training, equipment preparations, ice profiling completed, winter road construction activities now underway. Snow clearing of water bodies to full width and construction of portages from Wekweètì southward to towards P265 (16 km) is mostly complete. Constructing of overland sections and clearing waterbodies full width from P264 south to P262 is scheduled over the next few days.
