As a parent Literacy week is a good time to set homework routines for your child by:
- Having homework at the same time each day (if homework is not assigned by a teacher, students still need to read for 15 minutes each day and review work to date to prepare for upcoming quizzes, tests and exams).
- Having a quiet place to do homework with no interruptions is necessary.
- Asking your chıld about their day at school and what they learnt.
Possıble family activities during literacy week:
- Reading with your child or have your child read to you; books at your child’s interest level, newspapers, websites, literacy council information and activities, etc.
- Share your favourite book with a friend or family member
- Singing and dancing with your child; two-step, jigging, drum dance, fiddling, square dancing, etc.
- Games to encourage social interaction; Twister, Scrabble, Boggle, Checkers, Crazy 8’s, etc.
- Building activities; using Lego, Popsicle sticks, use furniture, boxes and/or blankets to make forts, etc.
- Drama activities; role play, Charades, Karaoke, etc.
- Traditional activities; sewing, going for walks, storytelling /listening, outings/picnics, etc.
- Cooking/baking; bannock, cookies, cake, supper, using caribou meat or fish to prepare a meal, berries to make a dessert, etc.
- Writing; favourite family recipes, letter to a loved one, send a request to the radio station, letter to community leaders with ideas for improvement, letter to the newspaper regarding a good news story, journal writing, post on Tlicho.ca something positive, etc.
- Draw or paint a picture and talk about it with others
- Technology; make a movie together using your iPad or iPod or iPhone, take photo to make a family slideshow and share it with grandma and grandpa, add captions to your photos, add audio to your slideshow or movie, etc.
Literacy is not just about reading and writing. Literacy is also about making connections using, listening, speaking, representing and sharing. Literacy includes critical thinking resulting in making better decisions in school learning and in home/community life. These activities can be done in English or the Tłı̨chǫ language.
