2021 TŁĮCHǪ GOVERNMENT GRAND CHIEF ELECTION - Final Results

Jackson Lafferty has been elected as Grand Chief for the Tłı̨chǫ Government.

On November 18, 2021, Tłı̨chǫ citizens went to the polls to elect their Grand Chief. The election was postponed from its original September 30th voting date due to the covid outbreak in Yellowknife and the
Tłı̨chǫ region. 
  • There were 795 votes cast in favor of Jackson Lafferty.
  • Edward Erasmus came in second with 523 votes; and
  • George Mackenzie came in third getting 369 votes.
  • There were 3 rejected ballots.
The voter turnout was 66%.

A total of 1690 ballots were cast at polling stations in Behchokǫ̀, Whatì, Gamètì, Wekweètì, and Yellowknife. Mail-out ballots, Advance polls, and Special Mobile polls also took place to enable students, the sick, elderly people, incarcerated individuals, and those traveling or working out at camps to have opportunity to vote. For the first time ever, electronic voting was available in this election to provide an additional covid-safe and convenient voting option for Tłı̨chǫ citizens.

The covid pandemic presented new challenges for this election and required unprecedented decisions and planning to protect the health and wellbeing of Tłıc̨ hǫ people. The Registrar would like to thank candidates and voters for their patience, cooperation and contributions in making this important election process safe for all.
