Security Checks on Charter Flights

Trails of our Ancestors: Baggage Screening

Thank You for Supporting Safe Travel to Gamètì and Wekweètì.

The Justice and Victim Services Division, in partnership with the Tłı̨chǫ Government Lands Department, assisted with security screening for the July 27 charter flight from Behchokǫ̀ to Gamètì and Wekweètì. We thank all staff and the K9 unit for ensuring a safe, respectful travel experience. Screening was mandatory, and non-compliance resulted in denied boarding and formal notice.

On July 27, 2025, a full-day security search was conducted in preparation for the Trails of our Ancestors canoe trip to Gamètì and Wekweètì. The purpose of this operation was to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants by screening all bags and food supplies for any suspicious, alcohol, or drug-related items. The security checks began at 9:00 AM and concluded by 7:00 PM, making it a long but productive day.

Every participant’s belongings were carefully searched. A few items related to cannabis were found and promptly confiscated as contraband. All items were documented, safely removed, and the rest of the participants' belongings were re-packed and secured. This important work was carried out in collaboration with the Private K9 Detectives and the Tłı̨chǫ Lands Department. Two Private officers were on-site with a trained detection dog, providing essential support during the process.

Their involvement ensured a thorough and respectful search. Despite a lengthy day, the team ensured the process was completed respectfully and responsibly. The successful completion of this security operation supports our continued commitment to providing safe and positive experiences for our participants during land-based programming.

The Justice & Victim Services Division of the Client Services Department funded and supported the event.
