On Friday, May 29th, representatives from the Tłı̨chǫ Government, Tłı̨chǫ Investment Corporation and GNWT Department of Industry Tourism and Investment visited the community of Whatı̀.
DCLP hosted a community lunch and held an open house to talk with residents about improvements being made at Whatı̀ Falls. A presentation was made by Mark Poskitt, and residents were invited to provide their comments about the Tłı̨chǫ Government’s plan to ensure safety for visitors and to maintain continued enjoyment of areas that have special significance for local residents.
Approximately 35 people came out to hear about safety improvements being made to the road and day use area and to share their perspectives. One on one conversations were held with members of the Tłı̨chǫ Government team, which included Department of Culture Lands Protection (DCLP) and Client Services Department (Economic Development and Career staff). A number of elders in the community shared stories passed on over generations about the significance of the falls. Discussions centered around how to protect things that are special and honor the stories of elders, and how to adapt to new opportunities that have arisen with the opening of the Tłı̨chǫ Highway to Whatı̀.
The Tłı̨chǫ Government would all those who came out to share their perspectives.
