Traditional Drum Workshop Held

Tłįchǫ Department of Culture put on a three day Traditional Drum Research Workshop last week.

Eight young men spent three days on the land and were taught by experienced drummers and Elders.

Topics of the workshop included: Caring for traditional drums, Significance of Drums, The drum as a sacred and powerful symbol and Personal growth and healing through drumming.

Throughout the workshop the young men were also taught songs and heard stories from Elders.

There was great food and lots of laughter that went along with the learning.

In the closing ceremony, organizer Tony Rabesca, told the young men that they are now drumming leaders.  He emphasized that they are a community and they will always be there for each other.  The young men truly earned the title on the back of their new jackets, “Tłįchǫ Drummer”.

Masi Cho to the Organizers, Elders, Cooks, Camp helpers and Drummers who made this workshop such a big success.

There are plans to hold another workshop for young drummers in the near future so look posters and advertising soon.
