Monument Honouring Mǫwhì and the Signing of Treaty 11
In honour of the leadership and legacy of Chief Mǫwhì who signed Treaty 11 100 years ago on August 22, 1921, the Department of Culture and Lands Protection (DCLP), Tłı̨chǫ Government, commissioned Tłı̨chǫ artist Darrell Chocolate to design and help guide the creation of a bronze statue of Chief Mǫwhì. The statue will be unveiled during the official ceremony to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the signing on Sunday August 22, 5:00pm.
This first ever bronze monument in Tłı̨chǫ region will be installed in Behchokǫ̀ on a cairn that will be built of rocks originating from all four Tłı̨chǫ communities. One bronze plaque tells the story of Mǫwhì’s life, and a second plaque illustrates the map of the land the Chief outlined for his people.
The bronze statue has been a two-year project and an interesting insight into an old and highly specialized artform.
The stages of project included
- Research and drawings based on historic photos and image concept
- Construction of an armature based for the pose
- Creation of a clay model
- Creation of rubber molds
- Bronze casting and final touches
We appreciate the expertise of the artist and owners of Studio West Bronze Art Foundry in Cochrane Alberta, and celebrate the talent and dedication Darrell Chocolate brought to this project.
We look forward to seeing you at the unveiling and dedication.
