The youth in both Behchoko and Gameti have had many inspiring encounters with fiddling this past year. Lots of learning and self-development has occurred as a result.
Every Monday, during the past school year, fiddle instructors, Linda Duford and Gerda Hazenberg came in to EMES to teach fiddling to the Grade 5 and 6 students. Several guest instructors also visited throughout the year.
The year end concert at the EMES was enjoyed by many. The students played all their tunes and also demonstrated their jigging skills. This was throughly enjoyed by the audience!
In Gameti during the past school year there have been four community visits to the Jean Wetrade School, in September, December, January and April. The fiddle instructors would teach in the school for four days and then have a concert with all the students performing on the fiddle at the end.
July 2-5, the beginning of the summer holidays, twenty Tlicho students were chosen to attend the annual Kole Crook Summer Camp which was held on the Hay River Reserve this year. Five chaperones traveled with the students and most of them also took fiddle classes. This way they can help the students with their continuing practice.
The camp was definitely enjoyed by all.
