EMR implementation in the Tlicho Region

I am pleased to announce that the Territorial Electronic Medical Record (EMR) will be implemented in the Tlicho Region. An Electronic Medical Record is a computer version of a paper chart that contains your medical information. This system will improve the quality of care, increase patient safety, enhance privacy and improve health care delivery. With the EMR your patient information will be collected and stored electronically. If you go see your healthcare provider at the Behchoko Mary Adele Bishop Health Centre after May 2016, you may notice them using a computer to record your information, rather than writing in a paper chart. Over time paper charts will be transferred to the electronic medical record. This reduces the amount of effort and time wasted on paper and pulling charts so more time can be spent administering care.

The EMR will facilitate your community care teams to be in direct communication with other general physicians and specialists who can provide additional expert advice about specific health conditions. These are positive changes which will also improve the privacy and security of the chart ensuring that only the people with authorized access are accessing your medical information.

The Behchoko Mary Adele Bishop Health Centre has been identified as the starting point for EMR implementation in the Tlicho Region. Once implementation at the Mary Adele Bishop Health Centre is complete, we will work with the EMR Deployment Team, to identify which other program areas and Tlicho sites may implement the EMR in the future.

During the implementation the day to day operations of the health center will not be affected and all of the programs and services will continue to be provided.

Having health information on the computer will allow authorized healthcare providers the ability to quickly and securely access your health information, no matter where in the NWT care is delivered providing the best care possible.
