(April 24, 2025, Yellowknife, NT) – The Tłı̨chǫ Government has signed a 10-year Economic Benefits Agreement with Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) for the Giant Mine Remediation Project (GMRP). The Chiefs Executive Council has unanimously approved the agreement, and Grand Chief Jackson Lafferty has signed the agreement on behalf of the Tłı̨chǫ Government.
The Agreement provides the Tłı̨chǫ Government with $1.99 million annually with inflation indexing built in (2025–2035). The Agreement supports the Tłı̨chǫ Nation in building long-term capacity for Tłı̨chǫ participation in the economic opportunities available in the GMRP. With this agreement in place, the Tłı̨chǫ Government can implement training and employment programs for Tłı̨chǫ citizens to help them access job opportunities at the GMRP. The Economic Benefits Agreement was signed on March 6, 2025.

This Agreement not only enables us to plan for and implement training programs for Tłı̨chǫ citizens, but it also creates a path for relief from the impacts of the diamond mine closures that will also affect members of our Nation who lose their jobs with mine closures. The training programs we advance with this funding will support the building of Tłı̨chǫ capacity and our goal to advance and uphold the Tłı̨chǫ Nation’s economic self-sufficiency.
