NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
(September 2, 2023)

To help evacuees of Dettah, Ndilǫ, Yellowknife and the Ingraham Trail prepare to return home, pre-registration for Yellowknife re-entry flights is now available both online and over the phone.

Pre-registration is the first step in developing passenger lists for re-entry flights. From there, appropriate aircraft will be booked based on need in established flight hubs. Pending evacuation orders being lifted, flights will depart as early as Wednesday, September 6 and continue for an estimated five days.
Flight hubs across Alberta are currently being identified and will be finalized based on need. Evacuees can also pre-register for flights from Whitehorse, Yukon and Winnipeg, Manitoba. Once an evacuee’s flight information is available, it will be sent to them at least 24 hours before departure via email or text. They will also receive information on ground transportation from evacuation/reception centres to the assigned airport. When email or text are unavailable, information will be provided to evacuees over the phone.

Evacuees from evacuated South Slave communities are asked to remain where they are rather than travel to Yellowknife. Given the limited services that will be available in the city as residents return, no supports will be available in the form of evacuation centres or accommodations for evacuees from other communities in Yellowknife.

“This is an exciting step in having our Dettah, Ndilǫ, Yellowknife and Ingraham Trail residents return home safely. Our team has worked to build a pre-registration system that will be easy for residents to use, and that will efficiently get those who need a flight home on their way once the evacuation orders have been lifted.”

- Shane Thompson, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs

Quick facts:
  • Evacuees are encouraged to use the pre-registration process so that flights can be organized to get people home as quickly as possible.
  • Pre-registration for re-entry flights is not intended for essential workers asked to return by their employer.
  • Patients in specified groups that are being advised not to return (dialysis, chemotherapy, IV therapy, individuals with advanced or high-risk pregnancies) will be contacted directly with more information. For these individuals who will be required to stay outside their home community due to the availability of necessary health services beyond the time when evacuee supports end, transition to Medical Travel supports will be coordinated. Pre-registration is not required
  • Information shared for the purpose of pre-registering will be handled with the utmost care and security and will be disposed of once re-entry is complete.
