GNWT Announces: Heating Payment for Seniors

YELLOWKNIFE (September 26, 2022) – In response to the rising cost of living, theGovernment of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will be issuing a one-time additional payment for 2022-2023 recipients of the Senior Home Heating Subsidy. This additional payment, ranging from $400 to $800 depending on the community the senior lives in, is for the 2022-2023 year only.

Seniors who have already been approved for 2022-2023 do not need to re-apply for the additional one-time payment; it will be issued directly to the heating supplier on record. Seniors who haven’t applied, are encouraged to apply for Senior Home Heating Subsidy for the 2022-2023 year before March 31, 2023. Approved applicants will have the payment automatically issued to their heating supplier on record.

The GNWT remains committed to ensuring our seniors can age in place with dignity. Currently, the GNWT is reviewing the suite of Income Security Programs to ensure that they are meeting the needs of residents.

The GNWT is committed to supporting seniors and enabling them to live healthy, independent lives. With the rising cost of living, we recognize that inflation is putting economic pressure on households including those of NWT senior residents. This one-time additional payment will assist seniors in heating their homes for the upcoming winter to help offset the cost of living while supporting the GNWT’s mandate commitment to enable seniors to age in place with dignity.

- R.J. Simpson, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment
