June 17, 2022 – The Tłı̨chǫ Government and local residents hosted a dozen members of the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference Program, June 10th and June 11th, in the communities of Behchokǫ̀ and Whatì. The program brings together Canada’s emerging leaders from business, labour, government, and the community sector for unique experiences aimed at broadening their outlook on work, leadership, community, and country.
During their two-day stay in the Tłı̨chǫ communities, Program participants met with Chief Clifford Daniels. Ted Blondin and Joe Rabesca also shared a brief history of the Tłı̨chǫ Government, Negotiation Era, and answered visitor questions. While in Behchokǫ̀ and Whatì, members of the Leadership Conference Program were invited to tour the area, enjoy a community barbeque, and learn more about the history of the drum and songs, traditional medicine, dry fish making, and bannock making.
Through these interactions, the Governor General’s Leadership Conference Program participants enriched their understanding of northern Indigenous issues and opportunities. It is anticipated that participants will use this knowledge to broaden their perspective on Indigenous related matters and encourage long-term working relationships with Indigenous communities.
Participants in the Leadership Conference Program share the common bond of being high potential individuals expected to achieve senior leadership positions within ten years. After nine days of travel, observation and debate, the group will reconvene in Ottawa where reports will be presented to the Governor General of Canada.
Since the first Governor General’s Leadership Conference in 1983, more than 2,200 emerging Canadian leaders have shared in the unique process of examination, debate, and discovery.
