Client Services Department held a Foraging Workshop in Whatì, NT from July 12 & 13, 2021.
4 applications were received, 3 individuals were selected to participate in the training.
- Day 1: Introductions, foraging workshop by boat to berry island
- Day 2: Making medicines and discuss wild plants. Workshop finished.
The Foraging Workshop was designed and tailored to meet the Tłı̨chǫ citizen needs. Upon completion of the workshop, the participants will gain experience in foraging plants in and around the community, which include the following:
- Learn what foraging is
- Rules for foraging
- What tools and safety equipment to use when foraging
- Learning and identifying various plants
Note: On July 09, complications occurred prior to training as Albert Nitsiza, whom had agreed for the Wilderness Safety Officer position, had to deny his offer the weekend before the training. Due to this, I had to find another boat to rent.
On the afternoon of July 09, Jerome Simpson agreed to take on the position of Wilderness Safety Officer and offered to rent his boat. He also said his brother, George Simpson, will be the second boat operator.
Forward a few days later in the evening of July 11, George Simpson informed us he was unable to be the designated boat operator. Jerome and myself spent the evening securing another operator but were unsuccessful until morning of July 12.
On July 12, we had to rent an additional boat (three altogether) and find an additional boat operator. We managed to successfully full everything together within 45 minutes. The training operated smoothly from then one.
