In Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples in Mourning on Canada Day

Tłı̨chǫ Government Stands in Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples in Mourning on Canada Day

Behchokǫ̀, NT (June 26, 2021) - The Tłı̨chǫ Government will stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples in mourning on Canada Day. To show respect and honour the children lost to residential schools and the trauma suffered by Indigenous peoples, Tłı̨chǫ Government will not be celebrating Canada Day.

It is a part of our Tłı̨chǫ culture to show respect when families are grieving. Indigenous peoples are grieving across the country and many of our own people have been impacted by residential schools. The Tłı̨chǫ Chiefs offer prayers to all those in mourning.

As a nation, we are continually working on our nation-to-nation relationship with Canada to ensure our Tłı̨chǫ land, language, culture and way of life are respected and protected for generations to come. We will continue to work hard as a government to promote healing, wellness, and cultural revitalization for our people who remain impacted by the traumatic effects of Canada’s colonial history.

Instead of marking Canada Day with celebrations, we will be lowering the flags in Tłı̨chǫ communities to commemorate the children who did not come home from residential schools, and also out of respect for families currently grieving in the Tłı̨chǫ region.

We are proud to be Tłı̨chǫ. We are proud of our Tłı̨chǫ land, language culture and way of life. Communities will host their own celebrations and events in the days to come to create opportunities for our people to gather as a Tłı̨chǫ and celebrate Tłı̨chǫ land, language, culture, and history as an Indigenous nation.
