Hozı̀ıdeè is a mini-documentary about Bathurst caribou, the Tłı̨chǫ Nation and the Ekwǫ̀ Nàxoède K’è (Boots on the Ground) caribou monitoring program. Due to the dramatic decline of the Bathurst herd, the Government of the Northwest Territories and the Tłı̨chǫ Government placed a ban on harvest of the Bathurst caribou in 2015.
Faced with challenges from the decline of the Bathurst caribou herd, the Tłı̨chǫ Government started the Ekwǫ̀ Nàxoède K’è program in the summer of 2016 to have their own people on the caribou range, monitoring the environmental conditions and cumulative impacts based on traditional knowledge of elders and harvesters.
The objectives are to monitor the conditions of the Bathurst caribou herd focusing on four key indicators identified by Tłı̨chǫ elders: (1) habitat conditions and impacts from climate change; (2) caribou conditions; (3) predators, and (4) impacts from industrial development. Field seasons have been carried out every summer and fall in 2016 – 2019, and will continue for years to come.
