This is a reminder to all Tłı̨chǫ residents that pertussis (whooping cough) is still circulating in the communities. Whooping cough can be deadly to babies and young children. This is what you can do to stop the spread:
- Identify symptoms
- Whooping cough starts like a cold with runny nose, sneezing, a mild fever and mild cough.
- Cough gets worse, leading to severe, repeated and forceful coughing that end with a whooping sound before the next breath.
- Cough can be worse at night and may result in vomiting and difficulty breathing.
- Babies and small children may turn blue.
- Protect
- For best protection, get immunized: http://bit.ly/2RaA9G4
- Prevent spread
- If you think you have been exposed to someone with whooping cough or have a cough longer than a week, notify your nurse as soon as possible.
- If you have whooping cough, please stay at home and away from babies, young children, women in their last 3 months of pregnancy, and large public gatherings.
If you are not sure if you or your child are immunized, please book an appointment with your local health centre.
