Behchoko Community Celebrates Achievements
On Thursday, Sept. 4 the community members of Behchoko enjoyed themselves at the sportplex grounds where the community picnic was held. The day was quite chilly, but the smiles of friends meeting friends warmed the day.
Festivities started with Behchoko Chief Clifford Daniels welcoming everyone to the community picnic. He offered several interesting updates about the Khon Go Cho Complex.
Chief Daniels also welcomed Grand Chief Eddie Erasmus to the festivities. Grand Chief Erasmus spoke about the background work undertaken by Chief Daniels and Council to make the Khon Go Cho Complex a reality. Without the commitment of the Chief and Council, he said, the impressive complex would not have become a reality. Grand Chief Erasmus expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped with the project.
With more news and surprises in store for the afternoon, Lawrence Kotchilea and Rene James Camsell showed their skill flipping burgers to feed the hungry crowd.
In the meantime, Violet Camsell Blondin distributed a newsletter from the Community Government of Behchoko. The newsletter offered updates on several community projects including Chip Seal Road, asset management, the water licence, the water intake proposal, water and sewage, the Landfill and other projects in progress under the leadership of Chief Daniels and Council.
Chief Clifford Daniels announced the final surprise of the afternoon when he called Sudhir Jha forward to distribute 10 refurbished laptops and 20 desktop computers, to individuals in the community.
Sudhir arranged for the laptops and computers through his volunteer work with the Smart Communities Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to broadening community access to information and communication technologies to enhance the social, cultural, educational and economic opportunities in the North.
“It was very happy moment to see smiles on faces after the computers were distributed. It made my day.”said Sudhir.
Community members also took the opportunity to visit the construction site. A helpful and informative Tlicho Construction crew safely guided the popular tours.
