Press Release - April 29, 2013 - Behchokǫ̀, NT
On Thursday, April 25, 2013, the Tłı̨chǫ Government approved the Tłı̨chǫ Lands Protection Amendment Law 2013 and the Tłı̨chǫ Land Use Plan Law, which brings into effect the Tłı̨chǫ Wene’ke or Tłı̨chǫ Land Use Plan. “The Tłı̨chǫ Land Use Plan is a significant accomplishment for the Tłı̨chǫ Government as it has been a work in progress for seven years” said Grand Chief Eddie Erasmus. “This Tłı̨chǫ Land Use Plan represents the Tłı̨chǫ vision for use of our lands that protects the land while recognizing that opportunities may be out there for land use proposals.”
Plan development was guided by the Tłı̨chǫ elders who considered their knowledge of the land of the past and present to determine how Tłı̨chǫ lands would look in the future.
The Tłı̨chǫ Land Use Plan will come into effect on June 1, 2013. At that time the moratorium on Tłı̨chǫ Lands will be lifted and Tłı̨chǫ will start considering proposals and applications for uses on Tłı̨chǫ Lands.
