Working Together – Tłįchǫ Government & GNWT
YELLOWKNIFE (January 24, 2014) – Members of the Executive Councils of the Tłįchǫ Government and the 17th Legislative Assembly met together today as agreed to in ‘Working Together – the Tłįchǫ Government/Government of the Northwest Territories Intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding’(Working Together). 

Areas of discussion included:

  • The Tłįchǫ Intergovernmental Services Agreement 
  • Housing programs and concerns in the Tłįchǫ communities
  • Improving road infrastructure in the Tłįchǫ region
  • Early Childhood Education in the Tłįchǫ region
  • The Healing Paths and Voices Wellness Strategy
  • RCMP Presence in Gamètì 
  • A grade 10 program for Wekweètì in September 2014

 “We continue to have a very positive working relationship with the Tłįchǫ Government,” said Premier Bob McLeod.  “These meetings are an opportunity for our governments to address mutual concerns, to share information, and to help identify opportunities for collaboration moving forward. We continue to see success from these meetings in helping us working together on issues of importance to the people we represent.”  

Grand Chief Eddie Erasmus, in reference to the session said “this is the fourth meeting in the last two years that has brought together Tłįchǫ and GNWT leaders and staff . When we work together on the issues, we can make real progress. The Chiefs and I appreciate the progress that has been made to date.” 

Formal government-to-government meetings are part of the shared commitments within Working Together, signed in June 2012. Members of the Executive Councils of the 17th Assembly and Tłįchǫ Government have committed to meet bilaterally at least twice per year.  This is the first meeting since the Tłįchǫ Government elections in fall 2013.
