Tłı̨chǫ Government supports the New Mineral Resources Act

Behchokǫ̀ NT (February 13, 2019) This week, the Tłı̨chǫ Government was proud to see the GNWT introduce Bill C-34, an Act that sets out a framework for mineral prospecting, exploration, development and production that brings real benefits to NWT communities and residents.

The Tłı̨chǫ Government has been working hard as partners in devolution with the GNWT and other Indigenous governments to prepare legislation that modernizes and prepares for a robust mineral exploration and development future. The Bill requires engagement and benefits for Indigenous government and organizations.

“This Act promises us a strong and predictable process for registering and managing mineral claims. We especially welcome the requirement for Benefit Agreements and engagement with our governments on new claims. These clauses will help Tłı̨chǫ people and northerners really benefit from mineral development,” said the Grand Chief George Mackenzie.

Tłı̨chǫ Government, the GNWT and partners in the co-management system, worked together to consider key issues in the co-development of the Bill, including modernizing the notification for mineral staking, and requiring Impact and Benefit Agreements. Moving forward Tłı̨chǫ Government looks forward to working with the GNWT to develop the regulations required to implement many parts of this act, and a complete and thorough review of the royalty regime that will create maximum benefits for everyone across the NWT.
