Behchokǫ̀, NT (November 1st) - The Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief, Chiefs from the Tłı̨chǫ communities and Yellowknives Dene First Nation Chiefs met on Friday October 11, 2019 to discuss issues of importance to both First Nations. Cultural partnerships, common areas of environmental concern and opportunities for economic growth were some of the significant issues discussed in a productive and open meeting.
Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief George Mackenzie stated “the Yellowknives Dene are our relatives, friends and colleagues. We have been living and working together for many hundreds of years.” Grand Chief Mackenzie explained, “as First Nations people we share the same values, including the need to protect and promote our resources, language, culture and way of life.”
“We are pleased to have an opportunity to work together with the Tłı̨chǫ to build a nation to nation relationship. These joint discussions are the start of creating new avenues for economic development for our future generations. The time has come to work together to build a sustainable economy for both our Nations.” Yellowknives Dene First Nation
Leaders of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation and Tłı̨chǫ Government agreed to meet again to discuss issues of concern and to identify opportunities for the two First Nations to work together.
