GNWT Post - Due to the latest weather forecasted to be well above zero for the next few days; starting Tuesday April 5 at 10:00 PM MST the Tłı̨chǫ Winter Road system will be restricted to NIGHT TRAVEL ONLY until further notice. Starting Tuesday evening the Tłįchǫ Winter Road will only be open from 10:00 PM until 10:00 AM daily to try to protect the portages and extend the life of the winter road.
Commencing Wednesday morning at 10:00 am; travel is not permitted between the hours of 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.
With warmer weather forecasted; along with the potential for quickly deteriorating portages the Tłįchǫ winter road system could CLOSE for the season with little advance notice.
- Please schedule to complete all re-supply loads to the Communities by no later than Tuesday evening April 12th, 2022.
If daytime temperatures dip and remain several degrees below zero for a few consecutive days we will try again to open for 24hr travel.
The Gamètì Winter Road is open to 50,000 Kilograms Gross Vehicle Weight.
The Wekweètì Winter Road is open to 34,000 Kilograms Gross Vehicle Weight:
- Please watch for a short section of single lane traffic at Portage 229 (Km 78 area);
- Watch for overflow areas on portages 229 and 251 (around Km 79 and 190).
All North Slave Tłįchǫ Winter Roads:
- Due to warmer daytime temperatures and increased solar load; anticipate slippery sections throughout the winter road system.
- Final loads of Commercial fuel re-supply to the Communities of Wekweètì and Gamètì is currently underway.
- Please use extra caution when traveling on Portages;
- Please be patient when meeting heavy transport trucks, and give them as much room as possible.
- Please watch for rough areas on portages and lakes; slow down when meeting oncoming traffic;
- Watch and slow down for construction and maintenance equipment working along all sections of the winter road;
- Please note the maximum speed limit throughout the Tłįchǫ Winter Road system is 50 Km/h;
- Maximum speed limit for commercial loads on all water bodies is 30 Km/h;
- All commercial traffic is requested to call Portage numbers on Public channel Ladd 1.
