(May 19, 2022) – His Royal Highnesses, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visited the Northwest Territories, as part of their cross Canada tour in May of 2022. During their 1-day stay they were greeted by members of the public and officially welcomed by representatives from the Tłı̨chǫ Government including Grand Chief, Jackson Lafferty; John B. Zoe, Advisor; and Tammy Steinwand-Deschambeault, Director, Department of Culture and Lands Protection (DCLP).
Prince Charles and Camilla were invited to the community of Dettah, where they met Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief, Jackson Lafferty. While in Dettah, the Royal couple attended a feeding of the fire ceremony, and a handgame and drum dance demonstration.
During the visit, John B. Zoe, Advisor also shared with the Royal couple, a Treaty 11, 100th Anniversary exhibit at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.
Tammy Steinwand-Deschambeault, Director, DCLP later shared with his Royal Highnesses work on the Ekwǫ̀ Nàxoèdee K’è (formally known as the Boots on the Ground) Caribou Research program. Attired in traditional Tłı̨chǫ clothing, Steinwand-Deschambeault also shared historical artifacts with his Royal Highness, representing Tłı̨chǫ culture and heritage.
