Tłı̨chǫ Nation mourns the loss of Rick Salter

With great sadness the Tłı̨chǫ Nation grieves the loss of a great ally; Rick Salter, lawyer and negotiator of the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement passed away earlier this week.

As a negotiator of the Tłı̨chǫ Agreement Rick worked with the Tłı̨chǫ for many years, visiting our communities frequently, sitting and listening with our elders and furthering our rights to self- determination and self-governance.

Many Tłı̨chǫ people knew Rick and his gentle and respectful manner.  Today that legacy remains through his son Colin Salter who still works with us, following in his father’s footsteps as a lawyer and strong advocate for Tłı̨chǫ people and our rights.

Speaking on behalf of the Chiefs Executive Council, Grand Chief George Mackenzie stated: “Rick Salter’s contribution to our journey to self-determination was significant. He was a friend and advocate for our people and fought many battles on our behalf. Our prayers are with his family at this time and we hope they have some peace knowing what an important role he played in helping the Tłı̨chǫ people realize self-governance.”

Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief, Chiefs and Assembly ask that we all send our prayers and thoughts to Rick’s family in their time of loss.

The family will be holding a Zoom session to celebrate and honour the life of Rick Salter, and invite the Tłı̨chǫ to attend:
