Native Press Digitization Project
This important project is a partnership with the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Center. It involves the identification and digitization of the former Native Press Newspaper photo collection from the 1970s. This initial phase of the project is only looking at the first 5000 photos from the collection dating from 1971-1977.
There were 2 workshops held in our region; one was held in Behchokǫ̀ and the other was held in Gametı̀ during the Tłı̨chǫ Assembly. At the Assembly this summer, Mary Adele Mackenzie, Tłı̨chǫ language technician, assisted the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Center staff in working with Tłı̨chǫ residents to identify people, events and place in the photos. The next step for this project is to develop a website with these photos where people can continue to provide information about the photos. The photos will also be uploaded to the NWT Archives photo collection.
