The Lac la Martre Commercial Fishery Workshop was held in Whatì during Nov.30-Dec.1, 2020. Participants included fisheries biologist Paul Vecsei (TG), Terrell Knapton-Pain (TG) and Whatì community members.
Community members attended the meeting that was held in the Culture Center. Translation was provided by Isadore and Francis Zoe.
Purpose of the meeting was to review new economic possibilities brought forth by the soon to open all-season road. The road would provide a cost-effective link to the Hay River commercial fish plant. Over the last year, some community members were curious as to the possibility of initiating a small scale commercial fishery.
Paul Vecsei (TG) presented a summary of the previous commercial fishery operation of 1969-1972, along with an assessment of its sustainability. Also, participants were provided with the current price list for all commercially caught fish sold to the Hay River processing plant. Paul Vecsei also presented the requirements for any future Lac la Martre commercial fishery as outlined by Gordon Caudron, Manager Commercial Fish Operations Industry, Tourism and Investment, Government of the Northwest Territories.
Overall, the community members found the discussion to be informative but agreed that more participants should attend a follow-up meeting later this winter. Numerous logistical issues were emphasized by individuals who understand the cost of operating any small scale commercial fishery venture.
