International Indigenous Tourism Conference

Tłı̨chǫ Government Staff, and Community Government Staff and Council from Behchokǫ̀, Whatì, and Gamètì, and Wekweètì, who are also members of the Tłı̨chǫ Regional Economic Development Working Group (TREDWG), attended the International Indigenous Tourism Conference (ITAC) brings together people interested and invested in creating and contributing towards the Indigenous tourism industry. 

The Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada, co-hosted the 6th IATC in partnership with Tsuut’ina Nation, on Treaty 7 Territory in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Conference theme - Raising our voices: Building Economy Through Indigenous Tourism and Community Stories.  Conference brought together Indigenous tourism operators and experts from around the world for two days, learning and sharing their best practices, networking, breakout sessions, keynote presentations and cultural experiences. 

Indigenous Tourism is a rising topic for the TREDWG, which recently published the Tłı̨chǫ Training and Economic Develop Strategy, approved by the Chiefs Executive Council.  
 
Chief Clifford Daniels stated "We know that tourism is currently a $200 Million industry for the NWT, and we know that aboriginal tourism is a growing industry in North America.  We also realize that this tourism not only creates employment but strengthens aboriginal culture, so we recognize that the Tłı̨chǫ Region needs to develop our tourism opportunities. Tourism gives us an opportunity to promote our language, culture, way of life, and a better understanding of our self-government."
 
Next Step is approving the Tourism Strategy for the Tłı̨chǫ Region.
