Intergovernmental Meeting between Tłı̨chǫ Government and GNWT

BEHCHOKǪ̀, NT  (April 16, 2019) – Premier Bob McLeod, Minister Wally Schumann,  Minister Alfred Moses and Minister Glen Abernethy of the NWT Executive Council met with the Tłı̨chǫ Government Grand Chief George Mackenzie, Chief Clifford Daniels, Chief David Wedawin, Chief Charlie Football in Behchokǫ̀ on Tuesday, April 16, 2019.    

The meeting focused on areas of mutual interest, including:

  • Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act and Bill C-88
  • Caribou Management
  • Fur Harvest Subsidies
  • Slave Geological Province Corridor
  • Road to Gamètì

The Tłı̨chǫ Government and the GNWT are working collaboratively on a number of issues including supporting passage of Bill C-88, managing caribou and looking for ways to better support traditional harvesting.

The GNWT and Tłı̨chǫ Government committed to sending a joint letter to the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs expressing their support for and the importance of Bill C-88 - An Act to amend the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act and the Canada Petroleum Resources Act, and the need to ensure it is passed without delay.

The GNWT and Tłı̨chǫ Government will continue to work together to support passage of the bill, including making presentations to Parliamentary and Senate Committees.

The Tłı̨chǫ Government and the GNWT are committed to working together, and with other co-management partners, to support conservation and recovery of the Bathurst and Bluenose-East barren-ground caribou herds.                                        

The GNWT and Tłı̨chǫ Government committed to reviewing existing harvester assistance programs to encourage and incentivize increased trapping and living off the land in the Tłı̨chǫ region.

Infrastructure remains a priority for both governments. The GNWT and Tłı̨chǫ Government, along with the community of Gamètı̀, committed to establishing a working group to discuss improvements to the winter road to Gamètı̀ and options for re-aligning.

  • The Intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding recognizes the importance of the government-to-government relationship between the Tłı̨chǫ Government and the Government of the Northwest Territories.
  • The agreement commits both governments to meet at least twice per year.
  • The Working Together:  Tłı̨chǫ Government/GNWT Intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding was initially signed in June 2012 and was renewed in 2014 and most recently in December 2018.
