Jean Wetrade Gameti School, annual cross-country ski loppet

On Friday, April 17th, 2015, Jean Wetrade Gameti School in Gameti hosted the second annual cross-country ski loppet.

Students arrived into Gameti by charter on Friday, and enjoyed the chance to see and explore our community and school before feasting on a homemade spaghetti and meatball dinner. Meals for the 2 days were graciously prepared and served by the Gameti high school’s Travel and Tourism class.

On Saturday morning, students enjoyed a hot breakfast before taking part in various ski relays and skill-development sessions. Students skied an hour into the bush to enjoy a cook-out on the land for their lunch. Following lunch, students skied back to the school to participate in a special awards ceremony where prizes (donated from Ski North) were awarded for effort and participation.

Karen Johnson, of Ski North, attended the event, sharing her knowledge of the sport through activities and stations.

MACA’s Regional Youth Sport Events Contribution Program and Ski North were generous sponsors for this event. The event was a success, in part because all ski levels and abilities were welcomed.  “Teacher volunteers from Gameti, Whati, and Behchoko provided ski instruction in a very supported and non-threatening environment.

The staff at J.W.G.S. worked tirelessly to help make this event possible.  It was wonderful to show our visitors our pride in what we do, and where we live.” says Brendan Mulcahy, principal at J.W.G.S.
