Welcome

Welcome to Tlicho.ca

We want this site to be a celebration of all things Tåîchô. Our traditional lands are a vast area of boreal forests, waterways, and tundra stretching from the northern shores of Great Slave Lake to almost touch the southern shores of Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada. From the borders of Nunavut in the east towards the Mackenzie River in the west, our land is rich in wildlife and other resources.

Become a Foster Parent and Home.

The TCSA Child and Family Services Division staff are here to support and serve the Tlicho region. Currently  the  TCSA Child and Family Services Division is extremely limited and has only a number of Foster Homes available for emergency, short term, and longer term placements.  TCSA staff have been having no success in establishing  new foster placements. Many of our long time Foster Homes are full and or exhausted.

The TCSA is in need of  identifying stable, safe,  loving homes that would be willing to and have space for babies and children needing temporary homes.

In order to be considered to be a Foster Parent or Home the following is required:

-         Individuals must be willing to have a current Criminal Record Check completed,

-        Be willing to have a foster placement home study completed

-        Have appropriate space available in their home

-         Willing to take last minute, emergency placements

If you or someone you know would be interested in learning more about becoming a Foster Parent and Home please call the TCSA Child and Family Services Division at (867) 392-3005 and speak to one of the TCSA Child and Family Services staff.

Faces of the past

CJBS
Photo of head sculpture of Chief Jimmy Bruneau made by Harold Sampson Pfeiffer.

On Jan. 9, 1972, after many years of lobbying and waiting, the old chief Jimmy Bruneau finally got to speak at the opening of the new school named after him. After the speeches, the sculptured bust of the old Chief was unveiled in the school that would now offer Grade 8 for the first time.

In the gym, all the students were assembled on the floor watching. Elders and community members were transported by buses from Behchoko. A teacher was recording the event by camera on a tripod, hooked up to a reel-to-reel recorder.

Years later, in August of 1989, the Tlicho gathered at Roundrock lake, northeast of Wekweti. They were talking concepts for a mission statement for the Dogrib schools. In November of 1990, a group of elders gathered in Behchoko and listened to the recording of the old chief. After 2 days, the phrase ‘Strong like two people’ was coined by the late Elizabeth Mackenzie, to become a portal to the mission statement adopted in January 1991.
